Brian Jamison on Benefits of Open Source Software @ OTBC

September 5, 2008
Event Date:
10 September 2008 5:30pm - 7:30pm

As part of its ongoing Meetup series, the OTBC in Beaverton will present "Open SourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. Software: Benefits and Challenges," a panel featuring three distinct perspectives on open source software: legal, business and development. This from the official announcement on the Meetup page: "The panel will consist of speakers experienced with intellectual property issues in adopting open source software, participating in open source and open standard communities, and using a range of licensing models."

Brian Jamison, founder and CEO of OpenSourcery, joins panel moderator Martin Medeiros (partner, Swider Medeiros Haver, LLP) and Jim Wasko (Program Director for Cloud Computing, IBM Systems and Technology Group, IBM) to discuss strategic approaches to leveraging open source vs. proprietary software. We're pretty certain where Brian will fall along that continuum.

The Meetup takes place at the offices of OTBC in Beaverton. Find directions here. We look forward to seeing you there.

OpenSourcery officially a Drupal Association member

September 4, 2008

OpenSourcery - believer in, contributor to, supporter of, and advocate for Drupal in more ways than we can recount here - is officially an Organizational Member of the Drupal Association. We're still having difficulty transferring "ownership" from the individual who opened the account (yours truly, Thomas King) to the organization, so I'll just post a little screen shot here for good measure. We applaud Drupal.org for being such an incredible resource for everyone from independent developers to interested site owners to professional development shops.

OpenSourcerers at Drupalcon

August 22, 2008

While the rest of us stand enviously put, CEO Brian Jamison and lead Drupal developer Jonathan Hedstrom pack their respective bags and transform into international men of open sourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. mystery and mastery. Both will parlay their "business" trips into personal adventures, but we expect them to enjoy the stay, hobnob with the likes of Dries Buytaert and Kieran Lal, and return with plenty of new ideas.

They leave Portland with happy news on the home front. OpenSourcery's newest Drupal developer, Dylan Wilder-Tack, is making the most of his new position. His transition has been seamless and his work spotless. We only wish he could crawl into Jonathan's suitcase (we're talking Dr. Who level of comfort, TARDIS-like in its ability to expand for our intrepid Dylan) and travel to Szeged.

And look for some very exciting Drupal partnerships in the near future, bringing OpenSourcery together with some of our favorite nonprofit and developer groups both in Portland and nationally.

Bon voyage, gentlemen. And pirítós!

OpenSourcery to host Drupal Meetup Wednesday, August 13

August 11, 2008
Event Date:
13 August 2008 6:00pm - 8:00pm

OpenSourcery is hosting its third monthly Drupal meetup this Wednesday, August 13; as always, it's free, open to the public and wildly stimulating.

This week Alex Bronstein of CraftySpace will do a presentation of his oop module. In addition to the scheduled presentation, the meetups always encourage free question-and-answer sessions, problem-shooting riffs and comiseration. It's a wonderful place for Drupal experts and beginners alike, or those who are curious about what Drupal has to offer.

The meetup begins at 6pm at the offices of OpenSourcery: 711 SE Ankeny St. Call 503.777.7033 or email thomas@opensourcery.com for further details.

Jonathan Hedstrom's Drupal module a "Success Story"

August 6, 2008

We already knew Jonathan's work on 247 Townhall would turn heads, but we're still excited to announce that the project has appeared on Drupal's "Success Stories" page with a full-page description. Among the featured successes of 247 Townhall's launch is Jonathan's video upload module, which you can read about here.

We urge you to visit 247 Townhall and the Drupal node yourself, but we've gathered a few highlights anyway:

  • Site visitors can maintain custom lists of their favorite content.
  • Avatar images are automatically resized and given rounded corners and orange borders.
  • Site contributers can submit custom background images for article postings.
  • Site contributers can submit videos on node/add and node/edit forms that are automatically, and silently, uploaded directly to youTube for processing and display.
  • Site administrators can aggregate interesting user-generated content into a "series" or online publication.

Thank you for reading.

OpenSourcery welcomes three new team members

August 6, 2008

Another year, another 100% growth at OpenSourcery. We're taking on more projects than ever, releasing a bevy of free modules and going live with some very exciting sites.

As a result, our team continues to grow. This month we welcome Hans Dieter Pearcey, Dylan Wilder-Tack and Chris Vallely.

Dieter comes to us from a systems administration background with a solid understanding of software engineering. He's became a proponent of open source software during his tenure as technical lead for IC Group (pobox.com, listbox.com). Although Perl remains his main squeeze, he has room in his heart for Javascript, Ruby and Solaris.

Dylan is a software engineer with nearly a decade of experience. His background includes training as an electrical engineer, but he became passionate about open source software through his work with a university genetics lab. Dylan currently specializes in Drupal development, and has extensive experience with Perl and Java.

Chris joins OpenSourcery for the summer and, hopefully, beyond. He's currently studying Graphic Design at Oregon State University, where he's also experienced the joys of computer science. We're very excited to implement his print and web design skills on a range of projects, from internal work to beautiful client sites.

Welcome, gentlemen. And thanks for making our group photograph obsolete after about a week.

Introducing elementalClinic Project Manager Alex Kroman

August 5, 2008

A few weeks ago, Alex Kroman assumed the position of elementalClinic (eMC) Product Manager with the goal of delivering a unique service to the Mental Health field. Alex's combination of development expertise and leadership skills make him the perfect candidate to lead eMC.

eMC is an open sourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. Electronic Medical Records (EMR) application that combines world-class software with the security, value and flexibility of open source software. It's currently serving a number of clinics in the Northwest, but we feel eMC is such an incredible application it will find its way into a great number of U.S. clinics in the near future.

Visit elementalclinic.org to learn how developers are using the application, and stay abreast of developments right here at OpenSourcery. Among the progress Alex and the team will unveil this fall:

  • Electronic Claims Submissions
  • Public website with interactive software demos
  • Appearance at GOSCON and other mental health conferences
  • Continued software updates

We're even more excited than usual because this year we've hooked up with SourceForge for back-to-back, door-to-door parties that will last all night. The festivities begin at the Jupiter Hotel and end at Bossanova - literally 150 feet away. Don't worry about a thing: we've provided transportation to and from the parties, not to mention the drinks and dance floor.

Brandon Sanders of AboutUs to speak at POSSE

July 9, 2008

POSSE (Portland Open SourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. Software Entrepreneurs) has opened its monthly meetings to the public. This month, join us to hear from Brandon Sanders, a developer who works at AboutUs.org. If you aren't familiar with the site, please visit them and read the blub at the bottom of this posting.

POSSE meets at JAX bar @ 826 SW 2nd Ave. in Portland. 6pm-8pm. We encourage members of Portland's Tech community to join us for in-depth conversation and networking with entrepreneurs, consultants and developers (and many who are all of those things).

"AboutUs is a wiki whose goal is to create a free and valuable Internet resource containing information both about websites and other community created topics/information. The site was pre-populated with information about many different websites and thousands of updates are now being made by people each day. AboutUs.org is a fully editable website. Using a domain directory that aggregates basic information about any website, AboutUs promotes the data to a collaborative platform to encourage conversations between the organization behind the website and its constituents. Further, AboutUs capitalizes on wiki technology to develop process innovations for the knowledge work it supports."

Drupal meetup Wednesday Night

July 8, 2008
Event Date:
9 July 2008 6:00pm

OpenSourcery will host its second Portland Drupal meetup at its offices, located at 711 SE Ankeny (one block south of Burnside). The event is free and open to local Drupal developers, users, aficionados, newbies, et al. Visit the local node here.

This month, users have suggested we focus on how Drupal compares to other CMSs, an issue that's especially relevant in light of recent satisfacion surveys that show Drupal to be the current favorite.Since the report in question focused primarily on nonprofits, the conversation is certain to shift toward how Drupal fares in the business realm, and how developers see Drupal affecting a broader spectrum of users.

The meeting will begin at 6pm, and there is no need to RSVP. We'll keep the light (and the Spy Hunter, and the pinball) on for you.

Please contact Thomas at 503-777-7033 for more information.

Jonathan Hedstrom releases yet more Drupal modules

July 7, 2008

Jonathan Hedstrom is at it again. Over the last several weeks, Jonathan has released a number of exemplary Drupal sites for OpenSourcery clients, and with each project he seems to create new modules to satisfy needs both simple and complex.

You can read about each of the three modules on Drupal.org at:

Session API -allows data to be stored and associated with a user's session. This API acts in concert with another module, Session Favorites, to allow visitors to aggregate lists of content without becoming full-fledged users of the site.

Domain GeoLocalization - Allows users to enter their local ZIP code and be ushered to content aimed specifically toward that user's location. When combined with two of Jonathan's other modules, Domain Access and Domain User Default, this GeoLocalization module allows domains to have associated locative information and domain proximity searches, respectively.

And, finally, Domain User Default.

Oregon State Fair website launch with "Session Favorites" module

June 24, 2008

OpenSourcery's lead Drupal developer, Jonathan Hedstrom, has been working to create a striking, feature-rich website for the good people at the Oregon State Fair. The site has recently gone live, so we wanted to take a moment and boast about the outcome.

The Fair's promoters wanted an attractive, easy-to-navigate site that helped visitors make sense of hundreds of events spanning eleven days. Visit the site yourself and check out the bands, the shows and special deals. As the promoters say, "It's too big to miss."

Look to Jonathan's blog for further development details, but here at NEWS we'd like to share an exciting feature he built for the site: it's a "Can't Miss" list that allows visitors to flag their favorite sessions and create a printable, personal schedule that ensures they're in the right place at the right time throughout the week. Basically, it provides a "Favorites" or bookmark system based solely on a browser cookie. This allows site visitors to build lists without becoming full-fledged users. It's an elegant solution for event planners in all fields.

Thanks again to the Oregon State Fair for the opportunity to work on their beautiful site.

Drupal video upload module in Beta release

June 18, 2008

After several weeks in development, OpenSourcery's head Drupal developer Jonathan Hedstrom's video upload module is now in Beta release. Download the module here.

Developers and Drupal users can find the official release here.

Non-techies, however, might better appreciate the video module this way:

For end users whose websites were created in Drupal, uploading video has never been easier or leaner. That's because you can now upload video directly to YouTube without the content without weighing down your Drupal host, which allows you to avoid storage and bandwidth bottleneck issues. Now sites with multiple users can act as the video portal, rather than sending users off to YouTube to upload individually. Drupal (on the strength of Jonathan's new module) does the work for you.

OpenSourcery would like to thank the OneEconomy network for helping to sponsor the module so we could return the useful code back to the community. Look for a Drupal 6 update soon.

WebVisions podcasts

June 16, 2008

The results - and the tapes - from WebVisions 2008 have arrived, and they're freely available here. Listen to experts weigh in on everything from the future of web design to our own Sean Larkin expounding on the joys of Drupal CMS. Go directly to Sean's presentation here.

We'd like to thank WebVisions' organizers for putting together an excellent program this year, and for allowing OpenSourcery to participate in the overall success. In addition to Sean's well-attended talk, CEO Brian Jamison joined a pannel of open sourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. trailblazers that included Ward Cunningham, Deborah Bryant and Josh Bancrof.

Now to prepare for 2009...

Excellent Turnout for Drupal Portland

June 12, 2008

A broad range of Drupal developers, from true beginners to full-time experts, descended on the OpenSourcery offices for the June Drupal Portland meetup, and everyone left a little bit smarter.

The event tends toward informal conversation and advice, but members also dig into some of their serious concerns and reasons for excitement. Among the items discussed was a 2008 CMS Satisfaction Survey (from NTEN) showing that the top-ranked CMS software is open sourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition., followed by commercial and, bringing up the dead rear, proprietary solutions.

The remainder of the meetup consisted of open discussion of issues that were giving developers trouble - migration from one CMS to another is particularly relevant at the moment - and some general conversation revolving around technique, code samples, demos, and, of course, hacking :)

The event is free and open to the public, every second Wednesday of the month, at OpenSourcery's offices. Join us next month at 711 SE Ankeny.

OpenSourcery to host its first Drupal Meetup Wednesday 11 June 2008

June 10, 2008
Event Date:
11 June 2008 6:00pm

Please join the Portland Drupal Users Group at June's meetup, to be held at the offices of OpenSourcery. We want any and all Drupal developers, users and curious individuals to join us and talk shop.

This month's topic is still wide open, so we invite you to bring new ideas and suggestions to the table. The meetup promises to be a great opportunity to network with other Drupal users. First time attendees are welcome. Oh, and there's free Spy Hunter and pinball all night.

Check the user group's site at: http://groups.drupal.org/node/12083

The meetup is free and open to the public. We look forward to seeing you there.

OpenSourcery Integral to Success of River Rally 2008

May 6, 2008

Last week, OpenSourcery sent conservation/kayak duo Sean Larkin and Will Illingworth to the River Rally outside Sandusky, Ohio. They've returned (a tad weary from their tireless participation) to share highlights with those of us who had to stay home and enjoy a beautiful Portland weekend:

The event itself was a great success. Over 450 conservationists and nonprofit organizers were in attendance; thanks to Sean and Will, they all left with a better sense of OpenSourcery's commitment to the conservation community. Our team has dedicated a great deal of energy and thought to helping river conservation organizations benefit from the incredible web tools available. Now we hope to forge lasting relationships with our new friends.

Together, Sean and Will led training sessions on e-waste, content management systems, web 2.0 mashups, and, perhaps most importantly, open sourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. fundraising tools. Due to their combined interest and expertise, they were able to educate conservationists on a range of topics and even cover a couple of sessions whose scheduled speakers couldn't make the trip.

Check out the River Rally site to see about their projects and plan for Rally 2009

New Drupal site! One Economy Corporation

April 9, 2008

We are happy to announce the public launch of the new One Economy Corporation site. One Economy's mission is to maximize the potential of technology to help low-income individuals improve their lives and enter the economic mainstream. In their own words:

We help bring broadband into the homes of low-income people, employ youth to train their community members to use technology effectively, and provide socially responsible media properties that offer a wealth of information on education, jobs, health care and other vital issues.

To present the public face of the organization, One Economy turned to the Drupal content management system and to OpenSourcery. Drupal allows multiple people easy access to updating their site and simple ways to manage video content. OpenSourcery makes getting set up with Drupal a smooth and simple process. Clients are ecstatic about the results.

I’m extraordinarily pleased that more and more people at One Economy are coming to understand the value of open sourceOpen source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. and, specifically, Drupal, even if they don’t realize it. It’s taken almost 2 years to get One Economy to this point. That is, from heaps of unmanageable, proprietary code to systems that are scalable and cost effective. Open Sourcery’s execution on this project as well as 247townhall.org and the BeehiveNetwork.org, has clearly played an integral part in that transition. Thank you.

-- Clark Richie, Director of Technology, One Economy Corporation

OpenSourcery is very pleased to be contributing to the mission of One Economy Corporation.
